Four Newcastle United playters have been sent home in disgrace from the club's training camp near Malaga, after a bout of good behaviour.
The four players, Alan Shearer, Rob Lee, Gary Speed and Shay Given were ordered home from Spain by Newcastle chairman Freddie Shepherd after behaving themselves at a dinner held in honour of Newcastle United president Sir John Hall. The four players have a reputation for being the good boys of football, but excelled themselves at the dinner where they dressed in smart dinner suits, ate using the correct knives and forks, and only drank two glasses of red wine, in stark contrast to the antics of the rest of the team. Kieron Dyer, Craig Bellamy, Andy Griffin and Carl Cort failed even to turn up at the dinner, while others drank too much and abused the waitresses. Chairman Freddie Shepherd used the occasion to voice his opinions on Newcastle fans. Shepherd called the antics of the four players "an absolute disgrace", saying that Newcastle United players were expected to behave much more badly: "We can't have this sort of good behaviour from our players. It ruins our image completely and is not good for morale." The players have now apologised to Sir John and promised that they will take him out for a drunken kebab to make up. G.W.
