Controversial street artist Banksy has hit Monkseato Drive's pavements with his unique style of artwork.

The distinctive line drawings of Banksy
The artist, whose public artworks have been seen in cities across the world, hit Monkseaton Drive in what is thought to be a protest against the Council's incompetence in managing the regeneration of Whitley Bay.

In a departure from his usual style, the images are crude white line drawings seemingly conveying messages in a futuristic script. According to critics who have studied the work, they believe the script actually gives detailed proposals for the implementation of regeneration plans but these will be untranslatable until at least the year 2230, by which time residents of Whitley Bay will have waited over a quarter of a millennium for regeneration to take place.

Unlike some other local authorities who have capitalised on the publicity surrounding the artist's work, Whitley Bay District Council is treating the artwork as graffiti and have stated it will be cleaned off within the usual cycle of graffiti cleansing regime. If you wish to see the work, it will therefore be on show until approximately 2012, by which time the paint will have rubbed off so much as to render it invisible.
