Whitley Bay District Council has come up with a new initiative to reduce its carbon footprint this Christmas - by leaving the town's Christmas lights switched off.

Christmas lights
Soon to be switched off - like the real Lighthouse
It is thought that not lighting the 5 bulbs of the spectacular Whitley Bay Christmas lights will save 0.00000005kg of carbon emissions this winter, along with saving the Council £5.99 in electricity costs.

A Council spokesperson said, "This is a concerted attempt by the Council to reduce its carbon emissions. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that we can't afford to replace all the blown bulbs."

Furthermore, the Council will be reducing its carbon emissions by not removing the Christmas lights after Christmas and instead leaving them in place throughout the year to save on the harmful emissions of cherry picker vehicles needed to erect and dismantle the lights.

It is hoped that other local authorities will follow Whitley Bay's lead and switch off their Christmas lights as well.
